Return to Zero

The Magic of Cultivating Neutrality

We talk a lot in magic about will, intention, and energy. But what happens after the ritual, when the energy’s released and the result hasn’t yet arrived?

That’s where neutrality comes in.

Recently, I’ve been exploring the work of Richard Dotts, whose deceptively simple ideas on “no mind” and detachment challenged my assumptions. At first, I resisted—was this just spiritual bypassing? But through conversation and reflection, I realized he was pointing toward something deeply magical: the power of returning to zero.

The Essence of Neutrality

In any magical act, we seek results: devotional, practical, or spiritual. Yet our attachment to how those results appear can sabotage the very current we’ve set in motion.

Whether we fixate on the negative (“Why isn’t it working?”) or cling to the positive (“This is working perfectly, I need more of this!”), both become energetic drags. Attachment to any polarity anchors us in reaction instead of response.

Neutrality, on the other hand, restores flow.

It’s not cold detachment; it’s curious presence. It’s the ability to let experience move through you rather than cling to it.

When you rest in neutrality, you access zero—the place where all possibilities exist. From there, you can choose consciously which possibility to manifest into “one.”

The Experiment in Practice

Neutrality became the real magic. It wasn’t about pretending not to care. It was about compassionately noticing my reactions, returning to zero, and allowing the experience to teach me.

This is how we refine our practice—not through bypassing, but through awareness, curiosity, and grace.

🜃 Key Takeaways

  1. Attachment creates drag. Both positive and negative fixation on outcomes pull us out of flow.

  2. Emotions and thoughts are experiences, not identity. You can observe them without merging with them.

  3. Returning to zero resets your magic. Zero is the fertile void where new possibilities emerge.

  4. Response > Reaction. Responding from neutrality amplifies presence and potency.

  5. Compassion completes the cycle. Grace for your humanity grounds every experiment in growth.

The Challenge

For the rest of the day, practice cultivating neutrality.
In every interaction, whether it’s a conversation, a thought, or a magical act,
notice your reactions, acknowledge them, and return to center.

Ask yourself:

“What would it feel like to respond from neutrality instead of reacting from emotion?”

Share your reflections in the comments or in your own practice journal.
Return to zero and observe what arises.
