Unmasking Hidden Contracts in your Magical Practice
One of the lessons we’ve both learned over our respective years of magical practice is that any given system of magic that someone else has designed usually has hidden contracts in that system. These contracts may have intentionally or unintentionally been placed in the system by the person/people who developed it, but regardless of what the intent was, recognizing these hidden contracts can be important as you continue your magical practice.
Why would there be hidden contracts?
There’s a few reasons that there might be hidden contracts in a magical system. Each of these reasons is worth looking into, whether you’re learning from someone directly, or reading a book or going through a course.
A hidden contract is an unspoken or unwritten contract based around expectation. It can also be known as a covert contract and when a covert contract exists it creates tension and disharmony because there is a subtle energetic pull from the person who created the contract on the person or people who are receiving that contract. The originator is trying to get some thing and the hidden contract is weighed in their favor.
Energetic Obligation - You know the feeling when someone tries to put an energetic obligation on you. They want something from you and they include a hidden contract to get it from you. Maybe it’s a testimonial they demand from you because you took their class, and in that demand is also a pull on your energy. Maybe it’s something they’ve written into their books, where if you use one of their spells, they siphon off a bit of your energy. Maybe its a sigil that seems easy to activate but is setup to take your effort and direct it toward someone else’s goals. Regardless of what it is, when there’s an energetic obligation it’s set up to get your energy from you by coercion.
Guru Authority Taking - Whether its a Guru or an authority on a given topic, if someone is telling you that they are the ultimate authority, that’s a red flag. That person wants you to give away your sovereignty to their benefit. They want followers who will do what they say and never question what they’re doing. The hidden contract is the expectation that you’ll continue giving your resources, time and energy to that person so they can use it as they see fit.
Parasite Spirits - Corporate egregores, magical lodge spirits, and other types of spirits are created to feed the organization they represent. We already deal with this on a daily basis, through advertising and marketing designed to grab our attention, but when its applied on a magical level, its often done to benefit the organization at the expense of individual members.
When hidden contracts are written into a magical system or working, they won’t necessarily be detected right away. And sometimes, in all fairness, it might be an unconscious contract on the part of the person who created it, but more often than not, they are intentional and they’re designed to set up a situation that extracts your energy in various forms so that it benefits that person.
If you’re creating your own system of magic and sharing it with other people, its also important to be aware of these hidden contracts so you can make sure that you’re NOT operating from that place of ill intention. The reality of hidden contracts is that even if they seem to benefit someone, they operate from a place of scarcity and once they are revealed the trust that people may have had is permanently broken.
How to Unmask Hidden Contracts
Unmasking a hidden contract begins with one core shift:
You stop asking, “Is this working?” and start asking, “Who is this working for?”

Here's how to start unmasking hidden contracts in your own practice:
Track Your Attention (Somatic Scan)
After engaging with a system, teacher, object, or practice:
Do you feel energized or depleted?
Is your mind foggy, obsessive, or fixated?
Do you feel guilt, urgency, or compulsion to act on something—even when you don’t fully understand it?
Attention leaks always leave a residue. Your body often knows before your mind does.
Ask the Contract Questions
Bring the person, spell, or teaching to mind—or hold a physical object if relevant—and ask these aloud:
“Is there a contract here I didn’t consent to?”
“Does this require something from me I didn’t agree to give?”
“Does this feed me—or does it feed off me?”
Notice what images, sensations, or memories arise. These contracts from many hidden contracts show up first as a subtle “yes” to these questions even when your conscious mind says “no way.”
