De-centering the Northern Hemisphere in Magic

With Frances Billinghurst

Most magical books unconsciously center magic in the Northern Hemisphere and apply a one size fits all approach to how magic is worked with and thought about, when it comes to casting circles, working with the directions and even connecting with the phases of the moon.

Welcome to Magical Experiments

The community for occultists, pagans, magicians and psychics who want to explore the evolution of magic and get better results

In this episode I interview Frances Billinghurst and we deconstruct and decenter the Northern Hemispheric bias in Western Magic and explore the following themes:

  • How to connect with the land and directions where you are, and let go of the one size fits all approach.

  • The differences between northern and southern hemispheric experiences and how this challenges what we know about magic.

  • Why your experiences of magic are the most important teacher you can have.

Frances Billinghurst is an initiated witch, magical practitioner and metaphysician who has been fascinated with mythology, folklore and esoteric sciences for over half her lifetime.

Residing in Australia, she is the author of Dancing the Sacred Wheel (one of the few books solely dedicated to the sabbats in the Southern Hemisphere), Encountering the Dark Goddess: A Journey into the Shadow Realms, Contemporary Witchcraft: Foundational Practices for a Magical Life and On Her Silver Rays: A Guide to the Moon, Myth and Magic
