In this conversation with
, we explored what happens when magic becomes an embodied process of self-transformation rather than a collection of tools or rituals. Eric’s journey began with Edred Thorson’s Futhark and Nine Doors of Midgard, where he learned to approach the runes not as symbols of power to command, but as mirrors for transformation. Later, authors like Don Webb, Jason Miller, and Coby Michael helped him integrate science, structure, and the poison path into a unified approach that values experimentation over orthodoxy. What stood out most was Eric’s commitment to descriptive magic — a system that emerges from lived experience rather than a prescriptive tradition. Like my own approach to magical experimentation, his practice strips away needless complexity and focuses on principles that actually produce results. When he couldn’t use candles, incense, or elaborate tools, he learned to build his magic through meditation, breath, and body: proving that the most essential magical instrument is consciousness itself.
We discussed the intersection of poetry and magic, recognizing that language itself is a technology of transformation. The right words, spoken with precision, can move emotions, shape reality, and align inner and outer worlds. In this view, poetry isn’t ornamental: it’s a spell and a condensed act of intention.
Our dialogue also touched on results-based sorcery: quantifying outcomes, testing variables, and replicating effects similar to scientific experimentation. Magic, in this sense, becomes a spiritual technology, a process of aligning subjective identity with objective reality through deliberate causation. As I shared, every working is a negotiation between who we are and who we are becoming.
Eric spoke powerfully about reception and reciprocity, the cosmic law of exchange that underlies all effective magic. To give and receive are both acts of participation in the flow of energy that sustains creation. Denying what comes to you, whether love, money, or opportunity, blocks that current. Accepting it with gratitude completes the circuit.
Finally, we discussed resilience and recovery, the alchemy of difficulty. For both of us, loss and limitation have been initiations into deeper awareness. Magic isn’t a cure-all; it’s an invitation to take responsibility for your transformation. Resistance builds strength, failure teaches wisdom, and synchronicity rewards those who stay present to possibility.
Eric’s closing advice could serve as a mantra for every experimenter:
“Don’t let anyone tell you how to do it. Start with what works, play with it, take notes, and make it your own.”
That’s the essence of experimental magic: reality as a living laboratory for consciousness, and every practitioner as both subject and scientist of their own becoming.
